at the op shop...

a few recent op shop finds... some more wooden toys, baby announcements (not for me!!) and some sheets and pillow cases.

I have sewn all the squares of my quilt together but am a bit scared to go any further! haha! I have bougt the batting and found the backing sheet (the top one in the last photo) but having never bound a quilt before i don't want to ruin all my hard work. do any of you quilters have any tips?

p.s - is anyone else having trouble commenting on blogs? I have been trying to commant on all the lovely posts of late but blogger seems to keep signing me out. i do not care for this. grrr.

  1. Hi Estelle, if I can bind a quilt you can bind a quilt!!! I used a you tube video tute because I had no idea what to do... http://www.byndees.com...a bit daggy but easy to follow and my binding looks rather pro (if i do say so myself! Ha!)
I am actually just doing the hand stiching on my second vintage sheet quilt!...and I've got you thank for that Estelle x If you hadn't organised the swap I would never started sewing x

  2. Hi Kel, me again...I was just scrubbing my bathroom (!) and don't know why, but it suddenly dawned on me that I called you Estelle when I commented earlier. What a nincompoop! I am so sorry Kel, I hate getting peoples name's wrong. Everything I said still goes Kel, thanks for getting me excited about sewing x

  3. Hmmm saw that little car & then the birth announcements & started wondering.....lol!
I was having trouble commenting a while ago on all blogger blogs & after a bit of research discovered that if i signed into my account & didn't tick the 'keep me signed in' box i could comment. I was also having a few other problems with followers & some blogs not opening & changed my browser to google chrome a couple of days ago & this seems to have solved all my troubles!! Hope this helps you too. Looking forward to seeing the finished quilt. x

  4. i have finished a quilt top with my vintage sheets too. i on the other hand am not confident with the quilting so i think i'll send it to a quilter for something fancy. i've only made a few quilts and on my last i was finally happy with my binding. i made my own binding, i sew one side and handstitch the back using a slip stitch. i do a mitred corner. i like this tute on how to make binding here..http://www.redpepperquilts.com/2009/11/binding-tutorial.html i find it pretty clear cut. you may have visited her amazing quilts before. i cant wait to see yours.

  5. hey darling! your fabric finds make my heart so happy. hoping you'll sell bits of them at the next rummage. i'm trying to save for my trip but i've decided i'll let myself indulge in fabrics! haha. when it comes to commenting and blogger asks you to sign in, make sure you UNTICK the box that says 'stay signed in' and you should be able to stay signed in and comment! woo! are you doing the next rummage? i'll be there. x

  6. hi my lovely - download google chrome and use it as your search engine, then your comment problem should go away. For your quilt - I used a quilting spray adhesive to hold my layers together, rather than pinning. I also think that quilting on a diagonal means less bulk under the arm of your sewing machine. It might be worth making sure your backing sheet is 100% cotton too, as well as your quilting thread. GOOD LUCK! xoxo

  7. Great stack of vintage loveliness there! No advice on quilting I'm afraid (one day I hope to be asking myself), but re: commenting, I found that using Google Chrome as my browser sorted it out, and have recommended this to a few people whom it seemed to work for too.

  8. Where do all you clever people find all these beautiful vintage sheets? My local op shops have absolutely nothing like this!
